The Currency of Opportunity: Mentorship, Sponsorship and Gender in SETT

This document introduces a practical way of thinking about mentorship and sponsorship, not as isolated initiatives, but as points along a broader spectrum of career development. From technical mentorship that builds competence, to navigational mentorship that develops organizational literacy, to exposure, sponsorship, and leadership, each stage contributes something different to an individual's career journey. Understanding how these mechanisms interact allows organizations to identify where opportunities are created, where they are withheld, and how leadership pipelines can unintentionally reinforce inequity.

The ideas presented in this document were originally delivered during The Currency of Opportunity: Mentorship, Sponsorship and Gender in SETT session, presented at Beyond Boundaries: Collaborating for Collective Action, the biennial conference hosted by the Canadian Coalition of Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (CCWESTT) in Calgary, Alberta, from May 23–26, 2026. Building on that presentation, this resource is intended for executives, human resources professionals, people leaders, and organizational practitioners seeking to design more intentional systems for developing and advancing talent.
